MY HALF....

I wouldn't ask for half my share,
My right, my inheritance, or the world,
But would ask of you and the human race
For just an "Iota of space"......

An Iota of Space......
In the vast expanse of your scientific mind,
That explores space, tracks planets, and discovers galaxies....
Let me be....
A tiny reminder of my dim existence....
Me, your daughter, a living presence!

An Iota of Space.....
In your brilliant brain that imitates God,
Decoding, modifying and cloning genes....
Let me be.....
A small voice in my mother's womb,
Pleading to live, I am God's child!

An Iota of Space....
In your romantic, generous, heroic heart
That is brave and gallant in any fight....
Let me be.....
a vibrant throb, a beating pulse.....
A speck of life that shouldn't be burnt!

An Iota of Space.....
In your world of Commerce, Cricket and Cars,
White collar jobs, Stocks and Shares,
So that I can be....
A gentle surprise.... that ME...
Though humble and weak, gentle and meek!
Could be clever and capable, competent and cool.....

In a world that could be 'OURS' instead of 'YOURS'

MY WORLD

What do I care for Riches and Rights?
Why should I yearn for freedom and might?
What would I do with my share and birthright?
To me it is naught....
IF....
I have your love,
To respect, regard,and honour
The many roles I assume
As sister, wife, mother,
As academic, career woman, or any other,

To cherish, value and treasure,
My life that I give to you....
My mind, my hands, my feet, my womb,
My waking hours, my many moods,
My pain and my sorrows,
My smiles and my laughter,
My songs and stories,

For,
You are my world, and this is my universe!

Dedicated to the Women of the World On Women's Day 8 th March 2010

Eulogised by poets, Immortalized by artists,
Praised by Philosophers,.....
Woman, you are, by far,
The best expression of God's creation!

You are the Essence of 'caring and sharing'
you are the 'Rakhi' of a brother's love
the 'Sindhoor' of a devouted spouse
the 'Mangal Suthra' of a sacred bond!
You are the 'Comforter' of a child
the 'Teacher' unparalleled...
the 'Goddess' unsung....
the 'Judge' fair and just!

And yet,
though loved as a mother, sister, wife, daughter
your innocent smiles, your joy and bubbly chatter,
Your precious world, built with love and laughter,
Crumbles as your dreams shatter!

Your little space
that you call your own,
is invaded, occupied, bulldozed...
and yet you strive on,
because you have embraced
the whole of humanity.........
to give birth and rebirth,
to nourish, nurture and protect,
This tiny, fragile "Flame"
that is called "LIFE"

note: This poem was written and presented by me on the occasion of International Women's Day 8/3/2010

Life is so beautiful

Life is so beautiful

I sit in the stillness of the night...
hugging the darkness close to me...
snug in the womb of silence,
loneliness shrouding my soul,
thoughtful,reflective,contemplating!

I think of the days gone by...
how colourful were my dreams...

how vibrant were my days...
how vivacious were my thoughts...
how eager my step!!!!...

Alive today, dreams half fulfilled,
do I call it a day?

Nay, I will give it my all

Till I breathe my last

still laughing,dreaming,positive..

because Life is so beautiful.....
I havent lived yet.....

Wonderstruck at Chirrapunji, (Shillong) the place with the highest rainfall (now second place)

Silence......... Solitude.......... Serenity..........
The grandeur of the mountains, the deep ravines,
the eerie silence, awesome, breathtaking....
Green, green, green, in so many shades and hues.......every where I turn, every where I look.....is a fiesta of green....
Silvery waterfalls that glimmer and glisten, sparkling, gushing forth, hurtling towards an unknown end,
Faraway, in the misty distance, rivers, lakes, streams, dot the plains,
I see the winding roads of the mountain trail, and wonder , "Man, whither goest thou?... Quo Vadis?"

Nearer humanity, we stay with friends on top of a hill,
The wind howled and whined through the Bamboo trees standing sentinel, lining the horizon ....
The leaves rustled and the boughs bent, struggling to break free....
Flashes of lightening seared the sky, white hot, sharp and linear.....
on the edge of nowhere......I stood transfixed, my heart beating fast...
I would have been swept away from the terrace....
A clap of thunder....... the laughter of the heavens..... and the rains came lashing down...as if on cue..

Morning dawned, silent
and serene,...
the air was fresh, tangy, cool, rarefied, paradise...
the winds rustled softly in the Bamboo trees.....cozy and coy,
the birds burst out in rhapsody..... the sky suffused in sunlight, luminescent, almost break of day....
I look around me, from my vantage point on the terrace,
I see the mountain ranges silhouetted against the morning sky.....unending, uninterrupted....
the wide expanse, the great outdoors, the freedom, the space......
I spread my arms to embrace all of it....
Truly, my God is an awesome God......
The greatest Architect.... the Master Mind... The Creator..... The Alpha and the Omega....

Note: The National Council of Churches had the 26th Quadrennial Assembly at Shillong in April 2008.
I was awestruck at the beauty of the place and also the simplicity and hospitality of the people there.
The poem is a tribute to the raw beauty of the place...... maybe later on I will add something about the people there.

A lonely man in a grave yard

I saw him there .....
a lonely man in a graveyard......
at the grave of his dear wife...
He stood there in silence, bowing his head, communing with her...
what he said I do not know,
I stood afar in respectful silence....

He looked around and identified other graves,
wherein rested the bodies of many of his kins people,
his friends and his little son who died in childhood......
His eyes swept over the grave yard
acknowledging them and breathing a silent prayer....

When I came to his house as the bride of his eldest son,
he was a dynamic, healthy and active lawyer, 61 years old...
never was there a moment of inactivity,
he set the house going with morning prayers in the early hours of the morning (a ritual I never dared to miss!).
His life was like clockwork ( he could give the newfangled Management schools a good lecture on Time Management and Finance Management) , and at the end of the day he drew the curtains on the days activities by bringing the family together for evening prayers.

I was in awe of him, not because I was his daughter-in-law, but because I respected him.
His integrity, honesty, and impartiality earned him a lot of respect, (but wasnt good for his profession!).
He was a perfect gentleman... one who kept his word and one who spoke his mind fearlessly and without favour.
He was brought up in the traditions of the Orthodox Church and he upheld his faith throughout his life, worked tirelessly for the Church, and brought up his children in the same religious, traditions and culture.

I used to love his company, because he was a person who was rich in experience and knowledge, and his anecdotes involved eminent people from the secular world and from the Church,
making his conversation all the more interesting.

I was very fond of him, not as a father-in-law, but as a father.....
He was a perfect family man...
No household chore was beneath him, he would willingly lend a helping hand....
He was encouraging and appreciative of an inexperienced (but sincere) cook like me whenever I fumbled with my culinary efforts!
Down to earth and practical, he was never a person who cribbed or found fault, but would bravely move forward in the business of life.
He was generous and sympathetic,
He had a good word for all and a concern for the children.
Whatever charity he did in silence.

He died as he lived, very practically, without wasting any time...
But he did find time to say goodbye to all his friends, to pray and to make the sign of the cross.

In the graveyard.....
I see him for the last time, laid to rest beside his wife......
in the company of all his kins people and his little son who died early in life.

As I travel back, and zoom past all the familiar landmarks, the grief that I had bottled up in me breached the flood gates...the tears I shed was because I knew that he would never be there at the homestead to welcome us, that this patriarchal figure around whom the family used to rally was now only a memory in the snapshot of time......

My heart has treasured all the moments I shared with him, yet I do not know why, the only picture that comes to mind and stays there is the one of

A lonely man in the graveyard......

Note: This is a tribute to my dear Father-in-law who passed away on 15th September 2007
with god on a mountain top

Lord, I feel your presence...
in the panoramic beauty that unfolds
day after day......

I sense your spirit...
in the woolly patches of clouds
hovering on the mountain tops,

I see your beauty..
in the shades of green
that stretch languidly
across space and time......

I begin to comprehend infinity...
in the waves of mountains
that blend with the hazy blue
of distant horizons....

I feel humbled
in your mighty presence
of yesterdays that melt into todays
and todays that live on
to eternity....

Note: I had the opportunity to stay for a few days at Charalkunnu, Kerala,
which was at an altitude where I could see waves of mountains stretching far away into the smoky grey-blue sky! I was fascinated and would spend all my free time gazing at the beauty. I could even see the origin of a river ! I scribbled this on the day I was leaving and gave a copy to the caretaker as my tribute to the breathtaking beauty of the place.!
